Singapore English name comes from the  Malay word,  Singapore  (  Sanskrit:  Sinha  – The Lion,  the Pura  – City literally Lion City), therefore, it sounds like the Lion City. However, the lions have never lived on the island. Lion most likely confused with the  Malayan tiger.
